Department of International Tourism and Hotel Management
The Department of International Tourism and Hotel Management (DITHM) was founded in 2017 upon the Belt and Road Initiative of Chinese government.
The DITHM aims to educate and prepare international students for succeeding in the tourism and hotel management areas by providing them with essential theories, knowledge and professional skills from Chinese local culture and global horizon. All the major courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students are taught in English, including textbooks, tutorials and examinations. The curriculum ranges from Chinese language courses as well as the theories of tourism, hospitality and event management, to the industrial practices and professional skills.
The undergraduate program of DITHM enables students to adapt to the current and future professions in tourism against the milieu of economic globalization and cross-cultural communications. Students have opportunities to develop, promote, and deliver events, design and market tourist facilities and attractions, and engage in and evaluate hospitality encounters. Contemporary issues such as sustainability, innovation and customer service will be explored on local, regional and global levels. The program blends cutting-edge research and theory with practical exercises to develop students’ managerial abilities and business acumen. The graduates, with a special bilingual skills and cultural background, will be well positioned for a promising career in the tourism, hospitality or events industries in and out of China such as higher education sectors, tourism research institutions, tourism business fields and exchanges of tourism culture both locally and internationally.
For international MSc and PhD students, the elective courses are delivered with consideration of individual background. All the MSc and PhD students are assigned a supervisor to guild their study and research. The students are involved in different research groups according to research interests to learn the research methods and formulate a research topic for the dissertation.
Most of the academic staff in DITHM have solid background of overseas study experiences (United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, United States, etc.), either with doctoral degrees or as visiting scholars. The lecturers have strong industry and research experience, integrating their expertise into their teaching. Meanwhile, the department constantly invites several world-famous scholars and experts from tourism and hospitality industry to give lectures and seminars for students. Taking the subject Hotel Management Practice as an example, it is taught by senior managers of five-star hotels. The students also have field trips to world-heritage attractions as a part of their study. Beyond the knowledge, DITHM also cultivates students by teaching them Chinese culture. Students in the department will learn Kung-Fu, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, Wine Culture, Tea Ceremony, Chinese Arts and so forth.
